What do the different colored lines represent?
Release Date:2026-06-11

In daily construction management and driving, besides road signs, traffic markings are often overlooked, mispainted, or confused, which not only affects traffic flow but may also create safety hazards and affect acceptance inspections. Today, we've compiled the meanings of common markings to help you easily understand them and avoid unnecessary detours.

01 White Markings: Basic Zoning, Mainstream and Universal

White is the most widely used marking color, mainly used to divide lanes, define areas, and indicate directions.

White traffic markings explanation

(1) Solid white line: Lane edge, parking space edge, intersection stop line. Crossing or driving over this line is prohibited; vehicles must drive and park according to regulations.

(2) Dashed white line: Lane divider. Changing lanes and overtaking are permitted, provided it is safe to do so.

(3) Solid and dashed white line: One side solid, one side dashed. Lanes can be changed on the dashed side; crossing the solid side is strictly prohibited.

(4) White directional arrows/text: Indicates straight ahead, left turn, right turn, and pedestrian areas, clearly defining the direction of travel.

02 Yellow markings: Warning and control, strict traffic control.

Yellow is visually striking; its core function is to warn, prohibit, and isolate. The specific rules for different styles vary.

(1) Solid yellow line:

Yellow solid line

The solid yellow line in the middle of the road separates lanes traveling in different directions.

Double solid yellow lines are mostly used on multi-lane roads, while single solid yellow lines are mostly used on roads with fewer lanes.

Whether it is a single or double solid yellow line, vehicles are prohibited from crossing, driving over, overtaking, or making a U-turn; these are strictly prohibited road "separation lines."

(2) Dashed yellow line:

Yellow dashed line

Road dividers allow for temporary passage and short-term overtaking, but prohibit prolonged stops.

(3) Yellow dashed and solid lines:

Yellow dashed and solid lines

U-turns and lane changes are permitted on the dashed line side, while crossing the boundary is strictly prohibited on the solid line side.

(4) Yellow grid no-stopping line:

Yellow grid no-parking line

Designated areas at intersections, factory entrances/exits, and in front of fire exits. Parking is prohibited under all circumstances to ensure smooth traffic flow and unobstructed emergency access.

(5) Yellow warning lines:

Yellow warning line

Steep slopes, curves, narrow roads, and the edges of intersections remind drivers to drive cautiously and slowly.

Besides white and yellow markings, red and blue markings are occasionally used in the area:

Red markings: Represent the highest level of warning and prohibition, mostly used for fire lanes and emergency areas; parking or obstruction is strictly prohibited.

Blue markings: Mostly used to delineate designated areas, such as accessible parking spaces, dedicated parking spaces, or non-motorized vehicle lanes, clearly defining exclusive usage rights.

Mnemonic:

White lines separate lanes and parking spaces; distinguish between solid and dashed lines to avoid crossing.

Yellow lines warn against parking; do not linger in grid areas.

Red lines are dedicated emergency lanes; obstruction poses a safety hazard.

Blue lines delineate dedicated areas; two-tone stripes prevent collisions.

Tips:

Proper markings should not only conform to regulations but also have durable colors.

Genni's entire series of marking paints strictly adheres to national standard color cards, ensuring pure white, yellow, red, and blue hues without color deviation or fading.

The paint film has strong adhesion, producing clear and crisp edges for both solid and dashed lines and grid lines. It remains smooth and resistant to peeling and blurring even after long-term use, easily passing all inspections.

A good project starts with a good line!
